John Ballem’s globe-trotting life encompassed many worlds, but the ones he knew best were the boardrooms and horse arenas of Calgary’s high society – the locales he renders in such detail in the Chris Crane series.

Widely respected as the author of the definitive study on oil and gas lease law, he showed his real passion for writing in more than a dozen novels and books of poetry. These revealed that, behind the lawyer’s analytical mind, lay an imagination of other extremes – between swashbuckling adventure and gentle sensitivity.

John Ballem passed away suddenly while editing proofs of this, his last novel.
